My first live Dave sighting was at The Kaffeeklatsch. I remember being completely shocked that Microwave Dave was just… there. Arms-length away, playing the blues on a random weeknight. I had heard of him — he was already a local legend — but seeing him that close felt unreal.
A few years ago, I had that same experience again at The Nook. Another random night. The same feeling. The same conversation in my head: How is Dave just here, playing? And how can I just walk up and talk to him? I remember thinking he should be playing the Ryman or somewhere much bigger, because he was that talented — a true legend.
But that, in my opinion, is exactly what makes local legends… especially Dave.
Years ago, I was closely connected with The Arc of Madison County, which supports adults with disabilities. The clients loved Dave. He would occasionally just show up and play a show for them. And when there was music at events, they didn’t ask for hits — they asked for Microwave Dave songs.
I’ve heard so many stories like this about Dave. They don’t make headlines, but they matter. To me, Dave played for The Arc the same way he would’ve played the Ryman — with heart, presence, and respect.
These are the jewels. The ones who stay local, play local, and serve local.
